Christmas is often seen as the pinnacle of gift giving, but the greatest gift of all is one we could never repay: God coming to earth as a human. This act was not just a gesture of generosity, but a profound demonstration of understanding and love. According to dictionary.com, a gift is something given voluntarily without payment in return, as to show favor toward someone, honor an occasion, or make a gesture of assistance. God’s gift—His presence in the form of a human baby—is the true reason behind this holiday. It is a gift given freely, with no expectation of repayment, and it shows God’s desire to truly know and walk alongside us.
As a child, I often wondered about the stories of Adam and Eve, and why their choices affected all of humanity. I questioned why God, who created the universe, would make covenants with people and set rules and traditions. Over time, I realized these were not just arbitrary commands, but ways to guide us toward living well—honoring others, showing loyalty, and striving for excellence. The ultimate gift of Jesus’ birth sealed a new covenant, offering us hope and an eternal inheritance that rectifies what was lost long ago.
Reflecting on this, I am filled with gratitude. God’s willingness to experience life as we do—facing joys, struggles, and temptations—shows a deep desire to understand us. I see this gift echoed in my own life: during family gatherings, I witness the beauty of coming together with people from different backgrounds and beliefs, finding unity and joy despite our differences. When I participate in a Co-Op group on Saturdays, helping provide food relief to organizations across our county, I feel a profound sense of purpose and connection, inspired by the example of selfless giving. These moments remind me that I am seen, known, and loved in a way that goes beyond any earthly tradition. They encourage me to live each day with thankfulness for the gift of God’s presence among us. And so, as I carry these moments with me, I am reminded that the greatest gift is not only received but lived each day—inviting me to respond with a heart full of thankfulness and a life shaped by love.
